I remember reading Crushing It back in 2018. In one chapter, Gary was talking about how podcasting would be a game-changer in the future, that more and more people would be listening to podcasts.
I had ideas that I had to put out. I needed to put out content – sharing growth concepts and other big ideas was the thing I couldn’t not do. So I took my shitty laptop, a Lavalier mic, and started recording myself.
The first episodes weren’t great. For some reason I thought that I needed dramatic background music. My first guests were my friends. We had fun, but, like I said, it wasn’t great.
That’s okay, though – just keep going. Like Ira Glass says, the first couple of years aren’t great, but your skills and most importantly, your taste develops.
The initial 10x moment was when I joined some Facebook groups. I know what you’re thinking – seriously, Chris, Facebook? But stay with me.
By putting myself out there I started making organic connections. I added my voice to the conversation, and then I was holding the conversations. I connected to experts by getting out of my own way.
And here’s the best part – interviewing an expert is like having a personal coaching session. Think about it. You sit down with someone that knows everything about the thing you want to learn and ask them questions. And then they answer them. How great is that?
Even better, each person I talked to introduced me to other experts. My network of experts was growing. I was building my own Tribe of Mentors, to borrow a phrase from Tim Ferriss.
Everything changed in September when I had Paul Getter on the show. Even if you don’t know who Paul is, you know who he is – he’s a marketing expert who’s worked with people like Tai Lopez, Thaddeus Koroma, Les Brown, Kevin Hart, and Akon.
That interview was 40 minutes of straight value bombs. Seriously, after that show I was more excited than I’d ever been. I was so grateful for everything in my life.
I think Paul could see that realization in my eyes. He connected me with other uber-successful entrepreneurs.
And that was it.
That’s where it all started. That’s when I found my ‘why’. I figured out why I do this, and that helps me keep moving forward with a beginner’s mind and a growth attitude.
I’m committed to connected with people and putting out more content, because the more you work at something the better you get. The better you get, the better you give.
So here’s my first value bomb. After talking to tons of experts, I realized there’s one lesson they all have that’s exactly the same. Value bomb #1 is … just start.
The #1 problem people have is getting started.
How do you solve that problem? I’ll tell you…
By just starting.
You can’t achieve something until you get after it. So just start.
That’s exactly how I started. It worked for me, which is exactly why I believe so strongly in the power of just starting.
Now, Value Bomb #2, the thing I had to find out the hard way, the thing I wish I knew when I started out is …
Find a mentor who is only a FEW steps ahead of you.
It’s a bit counterintuitive, I know. But hear me out.
The guy that’s been successful for years got successful in a different world. Those lessons are good, they’re valuable, but they may not speak to you. They forget exactly what it’s like to be young and hungry.
Like you, I’m young and hungry. I got out of my own way and just started. And that got me a seat at the table. Now I’m having those conversations with those people.
You’re reading this because you want to get out of your comfort zone. Because you know you want more. Because you know you can have the life you want.
But getting started is the hardest part.
Right now I’m holding seminars and workshops in Berlin that help you figure out what you want to achieve, pin down exactly what it takes to achieve it, and then figure out what you’re willing to do to get it.
